Stephen Michael
A West Australian Football Legend
Stephen Michael is widely considered to be one of the greatest ever players from Western Australia and arguably the greatest in the history of the South Fremantle Football Club.
Throughout his life, Stephen has demonstrated great values and integrity and the perfect role model to have a foundation honouring his name.
A proud Aboriginal man, Stephen was born in Wagin, WA and grew up in the southern Wheatbelt town of Kojonup before making his way to the South Fremantle Football Club where he became a legend.

Fremantle Dockers NAIDOC Cultural Immersion Experience ⚓️
We were proud to be involved in this special day organised by the @freodockers , @cityofcockburn and @cockburnarc . The day provided young people the opportunity to engage in a series of cultural, football, and sport-based activities that aimed to deepen understanding and celebrate the history and significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture.
As part of the experience, we delivered a mix of Traditional Aboriginal Games. This involved sharing the origins and stories behind the games, that have been played for thousands of years, adapted for modern gameplay and typically delivered by SMF as part of our Culture Through Sport program.
A wonderful day full of learning and sport, to celebrate culture, connection, and community! 🖤💛❤️
Fremantle Dockers NAIDOC Cultural Immersion Experience ⚓️
We were proud to be involved in this special day organised by the @freodockers , @cityofcockburn and @cockburnarc . The day provided young people the opportunity to engage in a series of cultural, football, and sport-based activities that aimed to deepen understanding and celebrate the history and significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture.

What a week on Christmas Island! 🇨🇽
Thanks to our ongoing partnership with PRL, we were back delivering a full schedule of school and community based leadership and sport programs for local youth.
Across the week, we delivered tailored Future Leaders and Rising Leaders sessions with students at Christmas Island District High School, focused on helping build confidence, teamwork, and, leadership skills.
And there was no shortage of sport either! With plenty of activity at our school sessions, and the two action-packed NightFields sessions we delivered in the community.
Each visit strengthens the relationships we’ve built and reinforces program impact.
We’re looking forward to heading back in a few weeks to continue our engagement and keep building momentum!

Stephen joined the @afl CEO Andrew Dillon, and @gcsuns @hawthornfc in launching the Sir Doug Nicholls Round. The launch was held at @laundrygallery_ on beautiful Larrakia Country, Darwin.
The exciting clash between the Suns and Hawks will take place tonight in a Thursday night game at TIO stadium 🤩.
Stephen is truly honoured and grateful to be named the 2025 Honouree for the SDNR. “I’m blown away by the support I’ve received from the AFL and the wider community. I never played for the recognition, so to be acknowledged alongside Sir Doug Nicholls and the incredible past honourees is really humbling.”
