Stephen Michael honoured in Sir Doug Nicholls Round

West Australian football great and proud Noongar man Stephen Michael has been named the 2025 Sir Doug Nicholls Round Honouree by the AFL.

A football career that set a standard

Stephen is widely regarded as one of the finest players WA has produced, and one of the best never to play in the VFL/AFL. He played 243 games for South Fremantle, was a key part of the 1980 premiership side, and won back‑to‑back Sandover Medals in 1980 and 1981.

He repeatedly turned down offers from interstate clubs, choosing to stay close to family, community, and his home state. Along the way he collected multiple club best and fairest awards, All‑Australian honours, Indigenous Team of the Century selection and Hall of Fame recognition at both state and national level.

Why this honour matters to us

The Stephen Michael Foundation was created in 2017 by South Fremantle Football Club and named in Stephen’s honour. That decision was about more than his playing record. It recognised the way he carries himself: humble, loyal, community‑minded, and proud of his culture.

Those same values guide our work every day. The Foundation supports young people across Western Australia through sport, culture and leadership programs that help them feel connected, confident and capable. Stephen’s story shows what can happen when talent is backed with support, belief and opportunity — exactly what we aim to provide for the young people we work with.

From legend to mentor

Stephen isn’t just our namesake. He continues to be closely involved with the Foundation, visiting schools and programs, sharing his story and encouraging young people to back themselves. For many of them, seeing someone from regional WA, with a similar background and challenges, honoured on a national stage sends a powerful message about what’s possible.

Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrates the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our game and our communities. Having Stephen recognised in this way strengthens our resolve to keep doing what he has always done: show up, stay the course and support young people to become leaders in their own lives and communities.
